There are many different opinions in regards to the origin of the trench coat. Some people would mark Burberry responsible for designing the timeless staple in most wardrobes.  Others believe Aquascutum created the first trench coat during World War I due to the high level of durability that Burberry’s version lacked. Either way; the trench coat has become a staple in almost 100 years of fashion.

The initial construction of the trench coat was to contribute the functionality factor for British soldiers during WWI. The convenience quickly turned into an option of dress, making the trench coat more stylish than anything else. Limited to only Class 1 officers, the trench coat was not only durable, but it also defined status. Of course the “Class1 Rule” eventually changed, allowing the fashionable trench to be worn by all, and everyone took advantage.

Many fashionistas and designers have tried to take credit for refueling the fire of the trench coat trend in 2006, but in all actuality, they didn’t have anything to do with it. The trench coat has been around for almost an entire century, and it is here to stay.
