Banksy, Graffiti Artist and Activist:

We cannot see you, but we know you are there.

When you think of graffiti, the majority of people probably do not consider this an art form.  Personally, one of the most interesting and elusive is “Banksy”.  This name is a pseudonym given to him as his identity is not confirmed.  He is a British graffiti artist who is believed to be born in 1974.  He evolved out of the British underground scene which was a collaboration of artists and musicians……

Banksy is known for his stencil technique that he oftentimes uses on the sides of buildings and near landmarks.  He also serves as a political activist whose themes reigns true as the subject matter for his pieces.  He does not sell his work on his own, yet art auctioneers have been known to attempt selling his work leaving it in the hands of the winning bidder to remove the work.  Some of his pieces have been sold to the upwards of six hundred thousand dollars.  He never arrived at any of the sales to maintain his anonymous status.  When questioned about fame, Banksy stated “We don’t need any more heroes; we just need someone to take out the recycling.”

His stenciled works (which he started doing as he could complete them faster) focus mainly on anti-war and anti-capitalist ideas.  Subjects are usually rats, monkeys, policemen, soldiers, children and the elderly.

In 2004, Banksy hung one of his pieces in the Louvre which was reminiscent of the Mona Lisa but with a giant smiley face on it.  Although the piece quickly came down, his point behind it stuck with me.  He stated “To actually have to go through the process of having a painting selected must be quite boring.  It’s a lot more fun to go and put your own one up.”  What a concept?  He later went on in 2007 to make his own “Stonehenge” which consisted of portable toilets.

The reason I have so much respect for Banksy’s work is not because of what the final image necessarily looks like, but rather, concept.  Where did everyone’s insight go in this day and age?  He is a thinker, an innovator and to most a mystery.   I think young artists should look to him as someone who is not afraid, someone who takes an idea and makes it reality.  He is someone who questions modern ideas, concepts, laws, and politics.

So let us all take a cue from Banksy.  Let’s make people think.  It is as simple as that.

Thank you for writing this article! It is nice to hear about artists who think outside the box showing their creativity. My inspiration has always come from artists who are not so common or trying to fit a certain mold.
