Males and Eating Disorders

A dangerous secret to keep

Society may not want to admit this, but women are not the only ones who suffer from Eating Disorders, also known as ED’s.  A growing number of men have been diagnosed with ED’s ranging from anorexia and bulimia to eating disorders not otherwise specified (also known as EDNOS)

Men suffer the same fears as women about their body image and this can affect their relationship with food, much as it affects many women. The numbers reported are low, out of the 8 million people in the United States suffering with an eating disorder, only 10% are listed as men. However, these numbers can be misleading. Many men fiercely hide the fact that they are suffering from this, and even fewer correlate their symptoms with an ED, and hence they go undiagnosed for years.

The reasons for male eating disorders are varied. Many men might feel pressured to look a certain way, and in order to do so they may drastically modify their eating habits to lose fat and/or pack on muscle. In other cases, some men might develop their ED because of high school sports where are certain weight must be maintained to remain on the team (such as wrestling).

Boys, much like girls, are intensely self conscious of their appearance. ED’s in males are particularly dangerous because it can go undiagnosed for a long period of time. Most ED’s often coincide with many psychological issues ranging from low self image to emotional or physical abuse, and can manifest in any sex, race or cultural background.

If you think you or someone you know may be suffering with an ED, seek the help of a doctor or a mental health professional.
