Songs of the Week

Anya Martinez

Coldplay’s “See you soon” & Bruno Mars’ “Grenade”

This week I could not pick just one song. These two songs have been on repeat on my iTunes play list for the past week and a half. They could not be more opposite “See you soon” from Coldplay’s 1999 EP “The Blue Room” is a mellow, heartfelt poem set to music. Bruno Mar’s “Grenade” from his from his debut studio album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” is a pumping, angry ode to an evil ex-girlfriend.

Coldplay is famous for hits like “Viva la Vida” and “Clocks”, but they are also known for the quiet release of their EP’s. More often than not Coldplay’s EP albums contain a few hidden germs; new tracks that never make it on to the radio or Hot 100. “See You Soon” is one of those tracks. Not many people who are not die hard Coldplay fans know it and the band does not often perform it on tour since it was part of their set list during their “A Rush of Blood to the Head Tour” in 2003.   However this track is so good, that I have to bring it to your attention, if you do not already know it. The opening rift is a smooth mellow guitar and Chris Martin’s vocals match the simplicity of the chords. It is the kind of song you can put on repeat and never get bored.

Bruno Mars is a compact package of megawatt talent. His voice is beautiful, his look is hip and the lyrics to his songs are truly relatable. Add to that the catchy beats and the fact that most radio stations play at least two of his songs every hour, and you can understand why Bruno Mars is such a big hit. I absolutely love his song “Grenade”. It is not too often you hear a young man singing about his heartbreak so plainly without resorting to corny lyrics.
