It’s not just for the unhealthy

Many young adults and working professionals underestimate the importance of a solid health care plan. Being younger and healthier means that many of your medical expenses can arise from unexpected illnesses and emergencies. Unplanned trips to the hospital can take a huge chunk out of your bank account and if you don’t have a solid healthcare plan, you might put yourself into some serious debt. An ambulance ride alone costs anywhere from $350-$800.

Young adults have the highest rate of uninsured of any age group, 30%. It seems the younger generation just doesn’t think insurance is important. However, health insurance is probably the most important investment in your life. The last thing you want to be focused on in an emergency is the cost of every little test the doctors are administering.

If you’ve just left college, you may still be on your parents’ insurance plan. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, young adults receive coverage from their parents’ plan until they are 26 years old. But keep in mind your coverage may be limited.

If you’re looking for coverage on your own it’s good to bear in mind that the younger you start, the more cost-effective your plan will be. If you’ve just started a new job, seek out your employer’s healthcare plan. This is the least expensive option if you’re strapped for cash. Only buy the coverage you need. Review you’re employers plan to make sure you aren’t paying for more than you need.

So if you’ve never considered how important a healthcare insurance plan is, think it over now. It’s an investment worth paying for.

Winter Health and Safety Tips

Staying warm safely

Whether you use a portable space heater or a wood burning fireplace for your heating needs, extreme caution should be used when employing any type of heating system. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 79% of fatal fires are caused by space heating equipment. Heating equipment continues to be the second leading cause of home fires, and the second leading cause of home fire deaths.

FDNY recommends that there be three feet of clearance between space heaters and furniture. Most fires are caused by heaters being too close to furniture. Portable space heaters should not be left on and unattended. If you are leaving the room, turn the heater off. It is also advisable to look for heaters with an automatic shut off feature, just in case you forget to switch the heater off. Remember to keep children and animals away from heating equipment. It is best to have a three feet animal and child free zone around the heaters.

If using a fireplace, be advised to have your chimney regularly inspected. Also, before you light any fires make sure the flute is open. You can do this by looking up the chimney. If you can see daylight, the flute is open. Keep an eye out for any other obstructions. Obstructions in the chimney can cause a backup of carbon monoxide in your home. Pressure-treated wood should not be burned in stoves or fireplaces because it contains toxic chemicals that can make you sick.

Test your smoke detectors regularly, and if you do not already have one, purchase a carbon monoxide detector, especially if you are using a fireplace. Carbon monoxide is odourless, colourless and extremely difficult to detect.

Common sense and safety go hand in hand. Do not use portable heaters to dry clothes or any other flammables.

Stay safe and stay warm this winter.
